Introduction

Welcome to our Management Information Systems (MIS) project blog. The objective of this report is to examine the operations and digital infrastructure of the Miron Student Center at Kean University, with a focus on how information systems support its core processes and strategic objectives. This study explores the organizational structure, technological tools, and strategic initiatives that enable the Center to deliver quality services and foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for students and visitors.

Located on Kean University’s main campus in Union, New Jersey, the Miron Student Center functions as the heartbeat of student life. It serves thousands of students daily, offering amenities such as dining venues, lounge areas, study spaces, a game room, event venues, and office space for student government and campus organizations. As a high-traffic location, the Center is essential for promoting student engagement by hosting a variety of formal events and casual gatherings. The facility is managed by a team of approximately 30 to 40 full-time staff and student workers who oversee daily operations, facility upkeep, and event programming. Through these services, the Center contributes to a vibrant, diverse campus culture that encourages community and connection.

The Center’s functions are supported by Kean University’s broader institutional systems and partnerships with internal departments and student-led organizations. Key business processes include room reservations, facility operations, and coordination of student-focused services. These functions are managed using platforms such as KeanWise and internal booking systems, which help schedule events, monitor space usage, and allocate resources effectively.

For additional details, including service hours, upcoming events, and reservation procedures, please refer to the Miron Student Center’s official website. Visual content—featuring interior and exterior photos—has also been included below to complement our analysis and observations.

Our team visited the Student Center in January to observe how students interact with the space and to assess functionality. During this visit, we also interviewed a student services coordinator who manages event scheduling and operations. We learned that the Center handles dozens of rooms requests weekly, primarily from student groups. The coordinator identified common challenges such as duplicate bookings, delays in system updates, and the absence of a mobile-friendly booking interface. These insights proved valuable in identifying areas for potential system improvements.

Data collection occurred between mid-March and early April, using a mix of interviews, direct observation, online research, and email communication with university staff. This was followed by our analysis and report-writing phase, resulting in the final presentation of our findings on this blog. A visual Gantt chart outlining the timeline of our project can be found below

The purpose of this report is to introduce the targeted business for the project, in order to take it through multiple operational tests and provide recommendations for increasing the productivity and output while simultaneously eliminating any problems found through intensive research. The Miron Student Center (MSC) at Kean University serves as the central hub for campus organizations and student activities. It is home to various facilities, including areas such as the game room, the tech lounge, the food court, and the Little Theatre. Some of the dining options include Jersey Mike’s, Auntie Anne’s, Smashburger, and the Cougar’s Den. Additionally, the center accommodates offices for the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Office of Student Accountability, Standards and Education, The Student Government Association (SGA), and the Center for Leadership and Service. There are no specifications about the sizing of the building itself, the exact number of employees, or the traffic of students on a daily basis online, however, the MSC is designed to support a diverse range of student needs and activities. Critical processes managed by the MSC include event planning and management, student organization support, and the provision of dining and recreational services. The mission of the Miron Student Center is to emphasize delivering exceptional facilities, resources, and services to foster professional and personal development among the students of Kean University.
